I look for the least overpriced meal and I get that meal.
Often it’s a sandwich, but sometimes it’s a burger. It’s still overpriced, but 200% overpriced is better than 500% overpriced and pretending to be bougie.
I got onigiri at breakfast on my last trip. It was just about perfect.
Cheap, hand food, fresh. If I wanted to purchase a second one, it would have kept nice until I was on my flight.
Man I wish my local airport had Onigiri. It’s like the most perfect on the go food
I order Mac Donald when I’m at security gate. By the time I reach the boarding gate with the MacDonald, my order is ready. And if I get blocked for whatever reason, well, it was “only” a Mac Donald, compared to being blocked at airport.
One Mac Donald, please
Isn’t that just Scrooge McDuck?
“beef empanada” Either use the name of the dish in the original language or in your 💔
Oddly enough, I have had both gourmet burgers and pizza. The latter at an airport. And before anyone jumps that it is obscenely expensive, I was travelling on the federal government’s dime.
Great so I paid for this. /s
I can’t believe you would take missiles out of the innocent government’s hands just to create happiness in a human.
The audacity!
Travel food is often expensive. I don’t mind paying 20-30 a plate, but it’s gotta be good. I was in LAX a while back and got some tacos for $30 there that were just miserable.
more like eating a mexican hamburger and a turnover.
this has gotta be a troll though. it’s like a weeb saying the same shit but with the punchline being to eat ramen.
De gustibus non disputandum. What a gatekeeping cunt.
People who gatekeep fucking food can just shove it in their mouths and shut the fuck up.
People who gatekeep fucking food …
How about we don’t fuck food at all

Whoa. You’re the worst kind of gatekeeper. Simultaneously gatekeeping food and kink shaming.
Then you explain it to your mother. That pie was supposed to be for eating, not for sating your carnal lust.
If your Puritan morales are getting in the way of eating it, that sounds like something you need to come to terms with.
You think it is morally OK to eat a fruit pie filled with your own son’s semen?
Answer quick, the FBI watch list guy is waiting.
Have I been watching too many episodes of “family pies”?
I don’t know, how big a fruit pie. What kind of fruit? What temperature was it at when he fucked it? When did I acquire a son? Wait, was this my cat son? BAD CAT! NO FUCKING PIES WITHOUT A PERMIT! YOU GOT TO GET A PERMIT FROM THE PERMIT OFFICE! YOU KNOW BETTER!
Now you’re gatekeeping camel lust? We ought to chuck you in the horny hole
Camel Lust?
Must be the eyelashes. I get it.
Bactrian or Dromedary?
Any humpie will do
Do the humptie hump.

Over airport food no less
There are several airports that I travel through regularly that have absolute shit when it comes to food.
For several of them I’m stuck steering towards the least offensive options.
Pizza gate keeping is amusing, no that isn’t real pizza! OK, wtf is it then?
Well I have experienced Non-Real Pizza when I moved to the west coast, a few BC places just gave you cheese on bread with toppings with no tomato sauce. Sacrilegious.
I’ve tried to explain to a few places (who do use tomato sauve) that they shoukd ouble the sauce they put on for a better flavour.
Sounds like a pizza to me. Maybe not a variant of it that you like, but still pizza.
Where I’m from that’s called cheese bread.
I do think a lot of things called pizza should be called flatbreads or something, but this is the first time I’ve ever expressed that opinion. It’s just not that important.
I would normally think of flatbread as plain bread. When its covered in typical pizza toppings, now its pizza
That question has a clear and very simple answer that most people dont like because it doesn’t correspond to their version of it.
The Wikipedia page sums it up:
Region or state
Naples, Campania
And
Raffaele Esposito is often credited with creating the modern version of pizza in Naples at the end of the 19th century. In 2009, Neapolitan pizza was registered with the European Union as a traditional speciality guaranteed (TSG) dish. In 2017, the art of making Neapolitan pizza was included on UNESCO’s list of intangible cultural heritage.
Pizza = Neapolitan pizza. Everything else is a variation (and that’s fine).
Sure, I’ll accept that. Pizza didn’t exist until 2009.
Or, more seriously, are you saying pizza was invented in 1889 in naples, years after people were selling pizza in New York?
Later research cast doubt on this legend, undermining the authenticity of the letter of recognition, pointing that no media of the period reported about the supposed visit and that both the story and name Margherita were first promoted in the 1930s–1940s.
Like all things pizza, everyone claims to be the first and they’re all liars.
If you demand true authenticity, accept nothing after the early 990s oiled flatbreads with buffalo cheese, sharing a common ancestor with pita. Because you’re not going to find an actual origin for who, where or how people first “properly” put stuff on their bread when we’ve been eating bread and stuff for all of human history.
It’s like saying that the only real sandwich is a single slice of salt beef between two slices of toasted bread with no toppings or condiments. Everything else is just some manner of dumpling.
That oiled cheesy pizza sounds good to me. But then I am probably the weirdo who actually wants to try the 1000+ year old foods, not the modern processed food imitations of them.
Modern food isn’t an “imitation” of older foods. It’s just food.
That one in particular is still super popular. Go to the store, buy a pita. Brush oil on it and sprinkle with some feta or a mozzarella bake to melt the cheese but don’t crisp the bread. Maybe grate some parmesan cheese. Depending on your store they might just sell it. Mine does, although technically focaccia is allowed to rise while early pizza/pitta wasn’t.And I hate to break into you, but bread is a processed food. So is oil. And cheese. You can’t find a loaf of bread growing on a tree. You can’t even find most of the ingredients in the wild: you pick the grass, remove the seeds, dry them, crush them into a powder while possibly removing some parts, and then mix it with other things, including but not limited to: the residue of seeds and nuts crushed into oblivion, processed and separated milk solids, and a hearty dose of preservatives (salt).
If you’re going ancient you also need to add some sand, since the mills were so garbage they left sand in the food. The way it etched peoples teeth is part of how we can tell dietary makeup.
Ultra processed then if you want to be pedantic
Hard to get more ultra processed than bread and oil. Unless you’re using a different definition, in which case modern bread and oil is readily available that’s just as unprocessed as 1000 years ago.
Modern cooking uses a lot less lead and sodium hydroxide than we did in the past too.The entire dialogue on processed foods bothers me because there’s no solid definition that doesn’t seem to catch a lot of stuff it shouldn’t that’s also actionable. When you push, they all seem to condense to “unhealthy food is unhealthy and you should eat less” which is useless.
Cannibals agree.
What kind of life do people like this lead where they think EVERY SINGLE PASSING THOUGHT they have is SO important and insightful that they need to get it all out there?
2008?! Fuck.
It’s honestly shocking how much worse the art has gotten, considering he’s been doing it for decades: https://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2026/07/24/the-leto-protocol
Wtf
Took the wtfs right out of my wtf hole
I mean, this is a top 3 boilerplate response to someone sharing something boring online. Sharing is generally a pretty meaningful activity for humans. Sharing person to person is a lot better for us than shouting things out on social media but that’s the model that’s provided and the behavior that’s being modeled.
It’s boilerplate because it’s still true and people STILL can’t tell the difference between insightful, useful information to share, and spewing stream of consciousness like they’re a junior high school student who just learned about the concept and is ABSOLUTELY certain they’re about to blow the world’s mind with their unique and mind-blowing interpretations.
By the time you’re old enough to be jetsetting, it’s just pitiful.
Yeah I dunno what to tell you, I’m just pointing out that it’s not much of an original insight either. Menial, non life changing conversations are perfectly normal and fine. In my opinion what’s weird is how few people are in our lives and how little time we have to talk to them, and also the giant bullhorn in everyone’s hands when they go online. Everything becomes a stance instead of just shooting the shit and getting reproached when you are too much of an asshole about your dumb little opinion. This guy chatting in the corner with some colleagues about liking empanadas more than burgers? Seems pretty harmless.
Well, he literally called dissenters 10-y.o.'s, and that kind of behavior is not “harmless” as the mindset behind it bleeds into other, related abuse and negativity.
Oh man, don’t go looking me up on Mastodon then…
He’s probably a LinkedIn poster
Not enough grindset content or some form of subtle worker shame.
I don’t know how you get the impression that the poster thinks it’s particularly important or insightful. People usually just post random things to interact with other human beings. It’s no different here on Lemmy.
Narcissistic personality disorder.
You’ve seen what people post to NoStupidQuestions, right?

You replied.
Bro got the palate of a latino 10 year old
Which is probably healthier than a lot of children in the US.
Nah man you see they used long words and therefore it’s fancy
Americans when they don’t translate the food:
It is pronounced “quasson” 🥐
If I am at an airport, I’m probably not gonna eat anything because I refuse to pay $50 for a single meal.
I probably am because I’m high as balls on edibles and ate the food supposed to last me the whole trip during the first flight.
I just got 3 grilled cheese, 3 orders of fries, and two (12oz canned) sodas at a city beach on Cape Cod. $52.
Not Nantucket…not Martha’s Vineyard. Not even outer cape or P-town. Inner Cape.
What the fuck man. Like, I get captive audiences…but that’s theme-park prices as far as I’m concerned.
That doesn’t honestly seem too awful for what sounds like 3 whole meals in this economy.
Yeah, I guess not, when you tack on the “in this economy…” to it.
And those fries were pretty friggen good, too. Grilled cheese was mid tho. Best grilled cheeses use mayo. Good grilled cheeses use butter. This had neither. It was more like a toasted cheese.
Was it just straight grilled cheese? Not something fancy like 3 cheese or added meat?
No. Regular grilled cheese. Orange American. Which, if you’re gonna make a grilled cheese with American, I guess is the better choice.
The airport is a wild place to judge and gatekeep others. Everyone is stuck there waiting, and depending on specifically where, you have limited access to anything brought-in and are at the mercy of massively overpriced options.
Right? Captive “audience.”
It’s also pretty poor vs. poor. If you’re going to gate keep the airport, where is the flex about some high tier lounge where you had a beer with a B-list celeb and they served whatever ridiculous stuff they claim those lounges have to sell passes? Lobster ravioli made by some Italian chef from Maine or whatever.
I aint see no celebs, but last time i flew my sister and her husband had a couple guess passes. It was great. Still pretty crowded, but especially once they flew out and i snagged a personal booth… whewweee it was worth it. At the price of nothing.
I dont fly often enough to give a dam, but for people who fly regularly it might be worth checking. My brother in law isnt rich afaik, but he definitely has a well paying job and is responsible. Travel is their big thing, so I see how it makes sense for them.
My spouse and I fly a lot, and have a credit card where we can get an annual pass for the price of going once. But that’s for the lowest tier, cattle call lounge. The business class lounges for individual airlines are usually nicer.
It varies by airport, but by the time I get a beer, some food, some coffee, etc. I’ve already saved $80.
Also the comment is right, the Beff Empenada is just some.boring ass basic shit but they gave it a fancy name.
If they called the burger a “Beef Slabion con Quisito” or some shit to make it spunds fancy and foreign, he wouldn’t complain.
So an empanada isn’t a rare delicacy or anything, but it’s a stretch to say that they just gave it a fancy name. It’s not being fancy to call a food by its name, and it’s not even foreign for a food to have a Spanish name in Miami.
People eat at airports?
Yes, Usually way better then the food served on the plane.
ppl eat at airports and brag about it?
I think they’re joking around because the idea is such insecure, hyperbolic clout chaser nonsense. It felt like a Simpson reference. “Only the most sensual dances. The lambada, the Macarena.”
Seriously. I traveled 100% for work for about 12 years and I ate at an airport maybe twice, and that was only because I missed my connection and was going to be there for like 6 hours.
I mean I’ll stuff myself with food and booze when at a lounge for a layover
Don’t see much point in visiting the airport restaurants tho
Also don’t fly very often
Who gives a shit what you eat at an airport? That’s probably the most utilitarian food imaginable. Plus, because of all the unknown international cross-contamination, there’s also the major “at your own risk” consideration. Complaining, judging, negging, or memeing about who eats what at the airport in any sort of serious capacity when it doesn’t affect anybody AT ALL is bizarre and gives me “we have Seinfeld at home but he’s just a cringe asshole” vibes.
Airports are stressful, chaotic, and uncomfortable. I’m just surviving when I’m in one. Definitely not trying to be doing any fine dining.
Excuse me, I brought my suitcase just for fine dining. It’s full of milk. and skittles!
You can talk all the shit you want about MIA as the airport logistics and operations are trash, but the $6 empanadas at Versailles, la carreta on gate D37 and a couple of standalone empanada places are the best food at MIA by leaps and bounds, and way safer than any of the sushi, sandwich other of the microwave to table restaurants there.
