I get it. Many people have a hard time separating a single experience from an entire population, culture or cuisine.
While I am absolutely not a fan of the Russian government at the moment, I have to force myself to remember that many of the Russian people are no different than you or I. It’s all to easy for me demonize and generalize an entire population as much as the next person, if I am not careful. (This is exploited heavily by state propaganda to foster xenophobia, in many cases.)
Still, a culture couldn’t be defined as a “culture” of it didn’t have distinctive and common traits. The same goes for regional cuisine.
After thinking about this a bit more (and also deliberating if I myself was overreacting) what we have is a fine line of context. Me exclaiming that “that countries food is crap” wouldn’t be the same as “if you let those people in this country, our food will turn to crap”.
My reaction is exactly that same as yours when I see out-of-place comments bashing Americans. I never go out of my way to troll or spread hate against any common person and it sucks when I get pulled into a generalization for no reason. Trust me when I say I hate our government as much or more than most of Lemmy and more power-hungry slobs are not what this world needs right now.
So, after considering your position a bit more and reflecting on how I react to similar situations, it’s just as easy to portray being xenophobic as it is to be perceived as xenophobic. Both could be true or false, and the only hints we have as to the actual nature of it is context. Context, unfortunately, is something that isn’t expressed well in text on social media.
I haven’t read what you have read and probably might interpret it differently anyway. So, if you think something is xenophobic there isn’t much I can say about that other that what I already have. Perception is what tips the scales in one direction or another, it seems.
Also, it depends on the problem you are trying to solve and if the good deal lets you buy plenty of spare drives.
I have a 3 server cluster running 9 k8s nodes with persistent storage in Longhorn. While it thrashes the drives a bit more and I lose performance, I opted to use hardware RAID so a drive rebuild would be much easier. (I think with Ceph, it’s a step or two more to kick a drive out of the storage pool before you can swap the drive safely. The fact that I can’t remember much about Ceph already and it’s only been a month or two since I setup a Ceph testing cluster should alone explain my decision.)
Basically, I get volume replication backed by easy to manage and affordable drive replacements. I even get mirrored boot drives too. The setup is fault tolerant to a degree and it gives me enough time to shuffle things around if a server starts to die completely.
All the drives are used and have already had a full life, but yey, the risk is ok because the parts are cheap. I’ll probably buy another refurbished server of the same type just for the spare parts, drives and memory. I could even just use the extra server as a cold standby. Whatevers.
The cluster isn’t critical, to be perfectly honest. It really just holds a massive tool suite of containers that I need at random times and now I at least have solid templates and ansible confogs for all of those containers anyway. Even the data isn’t super critical.
Parts are cheap and my setup allows for disposable drives in a setup where risk tolerance is sky-high.
My NAS is RAID 10 with brand-new drives and read/write cycles are conserved. I care about that data and will probably mirror that storage that to an additional pair of mirrored m.2’s to absorb most of the read a cycles while adding an additional redundancy layer. (The hdds would primarily only see write cycles and probably just function as an incremental backup location for specific folders off of the m.2’s.)
Those are the cliff notes, and only I attempted to explain how I thought about risk in my setup. Volume over quality for my cluster: I think about fast recovery and how I can parch around a problem during a catastrophic failure. Long term: Multiple layers of redundancy for important data with less concern about price but I have less capacity and speed.
Having spent years around lots of equipment, I view a flashy red light on an HDD as a suggestion to do something about it in a couple of days if the server is just a worker node. (I have been desensitized to most hardware faults, TBH.)
I wouldn’t go so far as to say xenophobic. Ignorance is probably a better description in many cases. It is also ok not to like types of food, or be disgruntled if the only thing to eat was food that was not to your liking.
Xenophobia could absolutely be an issue in some cases, but applying it broadly is a bit harsh.

The user is one of those half-bots. They repost like a bot and make occasional abrasive comments intentionally that seem to be designed for downvotes.
Saw those flavors of accounts on Reddit too. Super weird, but whatever. Maybe they are going for gallowboob-ish reposting fame on Lemmy, which makes it even stranger.
Well, there is Metallica, Inc. and Slipknot (the business entity) along with all of the related brands and labels that are attached to them, off the top of my head. Many other mainstream bands are just businesses too.
It is. I was a Navy sailor, so there were a couple of layers to my comment. ;)
Some sailors that aren’t military may need to repair sails, but that is a highly specialized job usually.
Sailors should be good at knots, but most are not. There are only a few jobs that would require the skill these days, TBH.
Random note: The neckerchief’s that the sailors in the picture are wearing only require a four-in-hand neckerchief knot and is learned once and usually only tied once. (You can just lift it over your head and put it on a coat hanger without ever needing to tie it again.)

I always considered MMOs a bit on the dangerous side. Grinding takes a toll on your body after a while.
Unfortunately, I am not immune either as I have been playing Diablo for years. Thankfully, it’s just seasonal grinding until I max my character and then I can go back to playing healthier games like Factorio, that absolutely hasn’t sucked 4000 hours out of my soul as payment.
