Not every. Many have continuously existed long before the US. When establishing the US, you’ve got those major themes of separation of church and state and no taxation without representation. It naturally intersects that these actual religious organizations shouldn’t pay taxes if we don’t want the government getting into their business and vice versa. And there are plenty of those.

The tax loophole ones, on the other hand, that end up as memes–the ones with flying Santa and Super Mega Jesus™ with web 3.0 NFTs to fund the Salvation Aviation™–yeah, those are similarly ridiculed and rebuked by the real religious people. It’s not just atheists that call b.s. on those “churches”, it’s also churches.

Making valuable things in a professional setting is resume material for climbing to the position you want. If you have some mobility to seek other jobs (at the same or a different company), be sure you’re looking for a role in a team where you can contribute with what you know while learning things from the others.

Google Wave tried to replace email with a come-and-go / bulletin board / long-form chat kind of thing. I’d still like that for occasional things, like organizing holiday get-togethers with the family, but that has been the only time I think about using something like that.

For most personal communication that isn’t biz-to-biz, it’s chat nowadays. And the rooms/teams/channels concept (like IRC) is the main medium for what I used to want Waves to be. At least on Teams, it still supports more than just a “tweet”, and people can come and go on those threads, and depending on the service, you can pin messages, associate a wiki for persistent content, etc.

But all those still require people to be on that particular chat service.

Perhaps that’s the end result for personal and group communication. The format feels pretty right for the job, to me. I just hope it eventually morphs into a federated system like email and Lemmy, as I just don’t imagine everyone agreeing to sign up for yet another chat service every time someone else wants to start a group chat. Then instead of “did you add so-and-so to the group chat”, we’d just pivot the problem to “oh, we were discussing this on the Slack group, but on the Teams group someone else said blah blah…”. Same problem–fragmentation.

I’m amazed that so many people have thought about all this with a term for something I’ve wondered about, and yet I still think this is the wisest branch of the comments.

I’ve been more careful in the shower lately, especially since ours is all stone tile. It’s got good traction, but I keep wondering what happens when people fall in showers–whether it’s usually a traction thing, or whether it’s significantly an orientation thing (due to temperature change, scalp massaging , head angle, etc. affecting blood pressure and equilibrium…).

Every time I saw a roadway accident in bad weather, I thought of it like something that wasn’t going to happen to me, until I had my own moment and realized my traction on fresh rainfall wasn’t what I thought it was.

Showers seem like the next “oh, that can happen to me” thing.

This title is outright lying by the way it mixes another person’s quote with the main subject. Ground News only found right-leaning sources.

This guy serves a swing district. His constituents may equally favor and reject his position on those issues. He does have to listen to all constituents, but it’s also fair that loss of decorum is going to shut down a discussion, if nothing else then because at that point it’s likely to not be a useful discussion. And if roles were reversed–imagine, for example, Sarah McBride saying what Eugene said but to a conservative constituent telling her the same thing–I think that situation would make it easier to see this a different way, and many might be saying “good for her” for walking away from it.

I don’t know, I wasn’t there. I’m just saying this smells to me like a smear piece in a swing district, and it started with unethical journalism by structuring the title the way it did.

But I think one of the examples I picked has finally talked me out of this. I would happily use “vacant” to also describe a place that has never been occupied, so it didn’t require vacating to be vacant. In that case, vacate means to make vacant, not vice versa. I’ll apply that to ignore/ignorant, and I think I finally understand how people have been so comfortable with that definition.

I cope by just being a little extra specific when I can find the words to do so, like calling out botanically squash are fruits and mushrooms are fungi, while culinarily they work as veggies.

“Ignorant” does mean wilfully ignorant. It doesn’t just mean uninformed.

To be vacant is to have been vacated.

To be an applicant is to have applied.

To be a claimant is to have made a claim.

And to be ignorant is to have ignored something.

(Of course, not all “-ant” words seem to stand alone without their suffix–at least, not in today’s vernacular. Does an arrogant person arrog? Does a fragrant flower frag? Rob Words might have more to say about the vestigial origins of some of these.)

Can’t wait to learn how I might just be ignorant about this (by my definition or the “real” one).
