All these job titles don’t really have a formal definition. Software engineer = programmer = software developer. Computer scientist sure does sound fancy though. There’s no committee that will say “actually you’re doing too much math to be a developer sorry.” We all do the code-y thing. Businesses seem to pick one at random based on seniority. I just call myself whatever my most recent job title was.
Your industry will affect your specialisation and skills much more than anything else.

As we previously reported, malicious code in Archive.today’s CAPTCHA page was used to direct a DDoS against the Gyrovague blog written by a man named Jani Patokallio. The Archive.today maintainer demanded that Patokallio take down a 2023 blog post that discussed the archive site founder’s possible identity. Patokallio wasn’t able to determine who runs Archive.today but mentioned apparent aliases such as “Denis Petrov” and “Masha Rabinovich,” and described evidence that the site is operated by someone from Russia.
In emails sent to Patokallio after the DDoS began, “Nora” from Archive.today threatened to create a public association between Patokallio’s name and AI porn and to create a gay dating app with Patokallio’s name. These threats were discussed by Wikipedia editors in their deliberations over whether to blacklist Archive.today, and then editors noticed that Patokallio’s name had been inserted into some Archive.today captures of webpages
“Honestly, I’m kind of in shock,” one editor wrote. “Just to make sure I’m understanding the implications of this: we have good reason to believe that the archive.today operator has tampered with the content of their archives, in a manner that suggests they were trying to further their position against the person they are in dispute with??? If this is true it essentially forces our hand, archive.today would have to go. The argument for allowing it has been verifiability, but that of course rests upon the fact the archives are accurate."
More than 695,000 links to Archive.today are distributed across 400,000 or so Wikipedia pages. The archive site is commonly used to bypass news paywalls, and the FBI has sought information on the site operator’s identity with a subpoena to domain registrar Tucows.
Looks like the app has a bit more functionality. I can see it being useful if you have many different devices with a variety of chargers and voltages. Would be a pain to manage all those cables and wall plugs.

I’m happy for you that you were gaming on Linux back then, but it absolutely wasn’t a mainstream thing. Windows dominated the market share. I knew one person with a Mac. Average users weren’t using Linux.
I really think you’re misremembering or blinded by rose tinted glasses, because almost every website had dodgey ads. Banner ads were basically Russian Roulette whether or not you got infected, and almost every site had them. Flash games sites, news sites, random user-hosted websites, yes porn sites, sometimes even MySpace pages, really almost every site was a risk and eventually the dice gave you malware. Unless by “being careful” you mean you stayed on Wikipedia and never actually used a web browser properly, you were getting exposed to these ads eventually.
Even the original article we’re commenting on mentions this, so I’m not sure why we’re all pretending that the internet was perfect back then.
I’m a kid of the 90s, and I still remember the early internet. It was slow, ugly, unreliable, and full of cranks, a strange world of wheezing dial-up modems, Usenet flamewars,
<marquee>tags, and dancing babies. […] None of this was entirely innocent. There were scams, viruses, Nazis, pornography, and chain emails from deposed Nigerian princes.
You can get supports and accommodations, especially at work and school. Otherwise, as you said, there’s little point to a formal diagnosis for the sake of it.
In my case, I don’t want/need any supports, so I was fine with a much cheaper unofficial assessment. It helped me understand myself and my struggles, like learning just how many things I downplayed as “being dramatic” was real sensory and social friction.

To Be Fair that’s all 4–6 months ago. Seems more like someone who:

If you see a disorderly drunk guy one time on the train and felt threatened, your amygdala will remember that literally forever
Up until now it’s kind of just been assumed that official device drivers are relatively benign and helpful. Y’know, like “install the printer driver so you can print things.” Device drivers have always been an attack vector though (further reading). Maybe tomorrow my printer will become malicious too! Though it’s arguably already borderline.
Sounds cool. Try to find other me’s and talk about any differences we have. Explore that avenue. I wouldn’t believe the 4 year thing until it happened, otherwise you’re basing major life decisions on a diagnosis from an untrusted source.
Getting drive-by zero click malware from an Adobe Flash / ActiveX embed banner ad, or JavaScript / CSS vulnerability, had nothing to do with how careful you were. You just randomly got viruses from your computer existing with an Ethernet cable connected. Antivirus were also pretty useless.
If you never got one, you were either extremely lucky, or just didn’t notice and it was sneaky spyware
There are some valid use cases. If I’m having a discussion with someone, and they’re downvoting all my comments, it’s pretty obvious that they’re not really replying in good faith. At that point, they’re usually here to “win” or troll rather than have a meaningful interaction. It gives insight into their intent and attitude.
But just as often, it turns out to be a random bystander doing it, so it’s important to check rather than assume.
