Not quite. In order to qualify for that category, the device has to require an Internet account registration to function, ie Apple ID, Microsoft account, or Google account. So Macs, Win11+ and ChromeOS qualify, but not Linux.

100% This is an absolutely terrible law with very worrying implications. Still, the title of the post is untrue and misleading.

How far they’ve fallen, all due to a single acquisition.

For those unaware, the saying used to be “If it ain’t Boeing, I ain’t going”. The reason for this was because Boeing had a well deserved reputation for quality, reliability, and overengineering. It was a company run by engineers. Another company named McDonnell Douglas, with the polar opposite reputation, went or was about to go bankrupt. It was a company run by salesmen. Boeing decided to buy McDonnell Douglas but instead of firing the entirety of MD’s executive branch, they decided to absorb them. In short order the MD virus that was their sales first executive team spread and eventually took over Boeing.

This is as I remember it so if I got something wrong, please correct me.

After reviewing the actual text of the law, I think the title of this post is false or at the very least extremely misleading by omission. I suggest editing the title or deleting the post altogether as to not spread misinformation.

The law explicitly notes that news media, broadband service providers, email providers, and learning management systems are not covered platforms and are not subject to this law. ​

There are scope limits all over the place in this law. It’s still a terrible law, but whoever posted it on Reddit didn’t seem to understand much of what they read.

The real issue with it is the device level age verification.

EDIT 2: Looking at the text, a big concern would be for users of MacOS, ChromeOS and Windows because each require an internet connected account (AppleID, Google ID, Microsoft account). These types of account would require an age and ID verification mechanism.

Former Austin resident here (1999-2022). The last house I owned there I bought in 2016 for $225k. In 2021 I was getting unsolicited offers for $750k (Zillow estimate in January 2020 was $450k). Finally sold it two weeks ago (didn’t know if I’d need to move back for work) for $515k.

A: Double the price in a decade is insane. Triple had I sold in 2021 is beyond words.

B: Someone in 2021 paid $300k over the market value a year prior and is now severely upsidedown on their mortgage.

I genuinely do not understand why my point was so hard to grasp. Billionaires are bad, yes I agree, but billionaires are the end product of a system that allow billionaires to exist. Do not only focus on symptom, focus on the cause.

Exactly! We need to set checks in place to make sure the mega rich are not allowed to be a thing. I am sorry but nobody should be rich enough to set up space tourism as a side hobby while his employees piss in bottles at the warehouse. That’s fucking insane!

I am not confused, and I don’t think we are necessarily disagreeing. My point isn’t that billionaires are faultless or good. My point is that they are not the root of the evil. We cannot just rid ourselves of the billionaires, pat ourselves on the back and call it a day. We have to do that, and then go further. We have to, at the very least, put the guardrails back in place to ensure a new crop doesn’t pop right back up.

The great crash and the following great depression took care of the robber barons. We regulated in order to avoid them again, but eventually forgot our lesson. I suspect that the AI crash will take care of this current batch of rich fucks, and we will once again regulate and focus on people like FDR did. I just wish we would stop forgetting the lessons of the not so distant past.

Billionaires are a symptom, not the sickness. Yes, we need to rid ourselves of billionaires the way we rid ourselves of the robber barons, but they are not the problem no matter how hard you wish them to be. The problem is the system that allowed them to exist. Rich fucks were always around to exhert influence, but not like this. We had guard rails in place to limit their political influence, to break up monopolies, to set limits on political donations, to set limits on campaign finance, to set limits on media influence, etc.

By all means, break out the guillotine, but you cannot stop there. Saying “billionaire bad” is not enough. You have to have wholesale reform or you are going to end up in the same place, or much worse.

Nah. Billionaires didn’t force Reagan and Clinton to deregulate the US and set the stage for what we have today. Capitalism existed while FDR implemented the new deal, etc.

Gen-X here (the ones immediately after the boomers but before the Millenials), it is amazing how many of my school mates ended up having no children. Yes many did, but a surprising number did not. In my circle (childhood neighbors, classmates, family) it’s almost half.
