I have plans on upgrading my hardware to the Switch 2 (日本語・国内専用), having two consoles is kind of annoying to manage: as I still have my Zelda OLED (ToTK) which is a “special edition” and I’ve changed the region on my alt account to Japan (my main account is Japanese) since I’ve already placed a pre-order for the Zelda 40th Anniversary Switch 2 (Console) for ¥64,607 (includes a screen protector and pre-order bonus) and the OoT Remake for ¥7,755 via Amazon.

When I eventually get my hands on the Switch 2: is it worth keeping the “old” Zelda OLED or sell it right away? The thing is that, as of now: that variant of the console is still available but there’ll be a time it may become rare as they’ll eventually stop making them. By then, would it carry any sentimental value? I’m conflicted whether I should sell it when upgrading my hardware or keep the old Switch in the case it’ll be deemed an antique and possibly a collector’s item.

Speaking for myself, I would keep it, but that’s just because I tend to hoard my old hardware as a sort of personal gaming museum for sentimental reasons. Which I admit is not a stance taken by everyone.

The Switch 2 can run every Switch 1 game, so from a practical position, the old one is not truly necessary anymore. But some multiplayer games work between Switch 1 and Switch 2, so it might be worth keeping the Switch 1 if you want to play those kinds of games with others. Or even if you just want to trade Pokemon with yourself.

    Switch 2 (日本語・国内専用)

thanks for clarifying, I might have mistaken it for another video game system

I never get rid of older gaming hardware. Sentimental reasons aside, there may be communities that now or in the future extend functionality of the hardware. So I think it’s worth hanging onto. We have the Zelda oled… it looks super cool too!

I say sell. 95% of the time, if you have to ask, you won’t need it; use that cash for something else, and let someone else use your Switch.

One caveat: my sibling’s Switch 2 broke soon after buying (WiFi just died), and they had to wait a bit for an exchange. My impression is the Switch 2 has some QC issues.

So maybe keep the Switch 1 a bit, as a backup in case your 2 is a dud.

I guarantee that 10-20 years down the line, it will be far more valuable as a collector’s item. Just look at any limited edition Zelda console released. The Majora’s Mask 3ds is going for $400-$600 right now. I say you should definitely keep it, even if you don’t have much sentimental value for it.

$199.99 in February 2015. Stuffing that in an S&P 500 indexed mutual fund would be worth over $700 today without even reinvesting dividends. And that’s more reliable than “maybe this console will be resellable at a much higher amount.” Also the investments are easier to sell. I’m not usually convinced by the future value arguments.

You’re comparing apples and oranges. The question was not “what is the best way to invest $200?” It was, “is it worth it to keep an already owned item for increased value at a later date?” And the answer to that really depends on OP’s opinion on wether or not an increase of 2-300% is enough to justify holding onto it.

You directly implied holding onto something for its potential investment valuation at a later date. It’s almost certain that a mutual fund investment will be worth more in 10 years, whereas a specialty console is a gamble whether it’ll increase in value and how much, and whether it needs to be in mint condition.

Therefore if the goal is future monetary value only, as you implied with the Majora’s mask example and setting sentimental value to the side, investing in a mutual fund is the more logical choice. Not apples and oranges when broken down to merely “which option is likely to be worth more.”
