You don’t even need to be in an accident. Some kid suddenly wandering in the street and you need to do an emergency stop. The car stops well before the kid, so no harm no foul right? Except the person in the passenger’s seat has been launched against the windscreen and now has permanent brain damage.

    Wear your seatbelt always.

Depends on local laws; for children it’s always the driver’s responsibility, but some states make the passenger responsible for themselves at 18 (to the point that a passenger but not the driver can get a no-belt ticket).

But my family has always been in the ‘everyone buckle up or I’m not starting the car’ school of driving.
