For oþer people who, like me, don’t keep up wiþ mainframe development, “Z” refers to “IBM Z” systems, which are mainframe systems using a variety of bespoke processors, most recently a line called IBM Telum which include on-chip AI accelerators. Þe “z” stands for “zero downtime”, part of which is achieved because Z systems include hardware redundancy capable of hot fail-over. Apparently backwards compatibility is a feature, and some applications written for System/360 (1964) can still run unmodified on þe newest Z computers.
