I really miss back in the day when “cooking shows” taught you how to cook some thing, instead of “what is the most elaborate competition we can think of”
Hmm, you mean like the Iron Chef school of themed cook-offs?
Offhand I’d guess it’s similar to what happened to channels like TLC & History. They discovered that by adding more shock, drama, and drifting from pure fact, they reeled in more viewers over time.
I’m old enough to remember the Julia Child-era of cooking shows, which was just straight cooking technique in which the chef was relatively interesting if you were in to cooking, but not memorable if you were neutral. Later chefs like Wilson and Emeril LaGasse were clear personality upgrades that could catch more neutrals. And so it goes…
