Thebes was in turn conquered by Phillip II of Macedonia, after he was taught by the general that led Thebes to that victory. Thebes was destroyed by Alexander, Phillip’s son, after they rebelled against his rule. When offered the choice to surrender and spare their city, they refused and fought to the death for their liberty. Does the empire of Alexander still stand? Did democracy die forever with Phillip’s conquests?
