Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Fellow 'Fediversers,' what keeps you hanging on here despite the "FV" being a work-in-progress, with all its built-in, various bumps & difficulties to experience along the way?
20·17日前My anger for the destruction of the old internet. My hatred of those who profit from aforementioned destruction. My pettiness for going against the current.

Linux@programming.dev•Have you or someone close to you converted to Linux recently (with Windows 10's end of support)?
2·23日前It’s an absolute joy, although I am a little annoyed at the random freezes I sometimes get, like when everything stops responding with no rhyme or reason. At least when Windows crashes, it crashes good and just reboots. But Mint needs a hard reset. Other than that, I managed to get all my games to play thanks to Lutris so I couldn’t be happier! I’ve had some tiny tweaks to make, for example my sound got crackly after some update, but thankfully there are tons and tons of troubleshooting that basically take your hand and guide you through what you need to do to sort issues. I’m immensely grateful for all those forums.
Your mention of a laptop reminds me I also installed Mint on my 16 year old lappy, it’s quite slow but it actually works with all the OG hardware (bar a new battery)!

10·23日前I switched to Mint in March. I have to use W11 for work and I thoroughly hate it. I did not want all the ads and AI stuff that come pre-packaged. I also did not want to upgrade my pc - I have an arbitrary rule that I’m only allowed new hardware every 10 years, so I have another 2 years left until I can upgrade.
So I used all my anger and pettiness, went on youtube to see how difficult it’d be to install Linux. The first video I found was Zorin vs Mint, and I thought Mint was a good fit for an absolute noob like myself. I really did not want to faff with learning commands and stuff so I was very pleasantly surprised with flatpaks and whatnot. Overall I’d say it was a very good experience, I’m just annoyed I’ve not done it earlier.
I’ve seen one of their comments, I thought it was a fun novelty. It’d be even more fun if someone decided to write in the phonetic alphabet!
The first paragraph alone filled me with so much emotion because my very first computer was a Pentium 75 too! If I hadn’t switched over to Linux earlier this year I would do it again in a heartbeat 💓 best decision I’ve ever taken!

4·1か月前Yeah I know that’s the next verse in the song - or is it what’s that? I always hear ‘what’s this’ unless it’s an early or live version.
It’s the best ad I’ve ever watched! So many little details in there it deserves more than once watch

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Should you copy a person's accent when pronouncing their name?
6·2か月前Ooh same! It makes me cringe when someone tries to say my name really well, even if I know they mean well, I can’t help it, it’s my French genes!
It’s more of a documentary than a movie tbf

Health - Resources and discussion for everything health-related@lemmy.world•Weight loss drugs can halve heart patients’ risk of early death, study findsEnglish
2·3か月前How wonderful, right just when Eli Lilly halted shipments to the UK.
As a sufferer of heart failure since the age of 16, my rage at those greedy knobheads is incandescent. I’m not raging at people who buy GLP-1 pens to lose a bit of fat when they don’t need it, those drugs are truly revolutionary in their benefits. Sadly producers know it and will charge eye-wateringly high prices for the product. They are the ones to blame, not Brenda down the road who’s on the Ozempic for £200 a pop because she wants to be a size 6 instead of a size 8.
I saw a comment by another Lemming on another post suggesting that generics might happen soon as semaglutide patent was not renewed. I can only hope this is true.
It’s something Steven Brule would recommend.
For your health!
There’s nothing more intoxicating than the clear absence of a penis.
Sincerely,
Matelt
No I mean it works perfectly fine but - it’s absolutely my fault for getting a 60% - I cannot deal with all the shortcuts and hotkey combinations. Like, the up arrow is the same key as ?, and when I was on Minecraft trying to ask a question I’d end up repeating myself because I’d hit enter as soon as I finish typing my ?. But of course the blasted thing thought I wanted the up arrow (loading the previous message sent).
Anyway that’s just me being a plonker, there’s nothing inherently wrong with Royal Kludge keyboards. Except the name maybe 🤔
Well TIL my Royal Kludge RK61 keyboard is aptly named! I hate the bloody thing

Linux@lemmy.world•Preventing e-waste by selling old desktops with Linux due to low system requirementsEnglish
4·4か月前I was like you and I took the plunge when W10 was given its death sentence. I watched a few tutorials on YouTube, picked a distro (Mint, it feels very familiar if you come from a windows environment) and after a few days of dual boot I got rid of Windows for good. Never looked back.
Initially there were some little hurdles with games, you can install Steam very easily (flatpaks are a godsend) but only a small selection of games are Linux-compatible by default. Then I heard about Proton, and with another flatpak installation boom all my Steam games worked, and damn well I have to add.
Then I heard about Lutris, and my Sims games that I thought I’d never get to play again now work.
Please don’t worry about not knowing what you’re doing, if you pick a distro like Mint you will not have to mess up with the terminal unless you choose to. Try running a distro on a virtual machine to see how it feels!
RIP John Redcorn, we miss you sug
