Looking purely at vote counts, he isn’t wrong. Trump lost about 3 million votes compared to 2020, whereas the Dems lost 15 million. There’s certainly a lot of blame to lay at the feet of “both sides bad” people who didn’t vote, but either way that’s catastrophically bad turnout for the Dems.

People staying home instead of voting against Trump is what cost Democrats the election. I hope the smug “both sides” folks here and elsewhere enjoy what’s coming to them in the next four years.

There’s a reason it’s part of so many high school curricula alongside Fahrenheit 451 and Brave New World and 1984 and Catcher in the Rye. I’m not saying those are bad books by any means, but they aren’t especially sophisticated. I had the same problem with the much-hyped Babel which, although I align politically with it, was as subtle as being hit in the face with a sledgehammer engraved with “colonialism bad”.

Norm was well-read, so if I were to guess he objected purely on literary grounds (the somewhat juvenile premise, the extreme lack of subtlety, etc.). He liked Russian classics which tend to be more layered.
