Solved: OpenSnitch, https://github.com/evilsocket/opensnitch available via Software Manager on Mint as well.
There was a windows firewall (tinywall?) that worked like this:
- Something wouldn´t work on the internet.
- I’d query the firewall to see what was just blocked.
- I’d whitelist that traffic.
Pretty painless and I never was forced to think about the firewall until absolutely necessry, and then only to the least possible amount.
Is there any firewall on Linux that works similarly? Running Mint.

maybe UFW?
The UFW I have on Mint (technically GUFW) seems to want me to manually configure each rule. I can’t right click on a blocked entry and say, “allow”.
- Little Snitch for Linux which could be a paid product but I have only used the Mac version.
- OpenSnitch which is the open-source alternative.
Both supposedly show a popup where you can allow or deny a connection with various settings (port, domain name, etc.)
That’s helpful. Gotta hardwire my jellyfin connection to the router, but my internet is via mobile hotspot.

ufw just works.
(PS, I also use someonewhocares’s hosts file (with my own additions up top). May interest, for a lazy painless way of blacklisting at least, and doing other redirects, and more.)
