About halfway through NK Jemisin’s weighty “The City We Became” (2000).
Back in February I realized it felt a bit off to be binge-rereading (dismal racist) HP Lovecraft’s complete works throughout Black History Month, so I pledged to balance it out with something equally weird by an author of color. Lovecraft may rightly be called the founding father and foremost pioneer of the “cosmic horror” genre - but as far as technical skill, his storytelling technique never evolved past amateurish.
