Hello, I’m setting up a home network for the first time, following this guide (https://wiki.futo.org/index.php/Introduction_to_a_Self_Managed_Life:_a_13_hour_%26_28_minute_presentation_by_FUTO_software) I’m using an old desktop with PFSense as the router, modem(+router/WaP) is the ISP’s combo device, an 8 channel unmanaged network switch and all I’m missing is a wireless acess point for WiFi, because since I’m putting the ISP router in bridge mode, I will lose WiFi capabilities. Through advice on the PFSense sub I bought an Intel I226-T1 NIC, to put in the router, wich means all I’m missing is a WaP. I’ve done quite a bit of research into this and ultimately (I think) as long as it supports 2.5Ghz 802.11n and 5GHz 802.11ac (Which is the same as my current ISP router claims to support, and, I belive, the standard) it should be fine. I want something reliable, but very barebones, I don’t need custom software and management stuff, I’m not going to have multiple APs I just need one, so I don’t need anything fancy, all it has to do is give good enough WiFi so my parents don’t tell the difference, when they are browsing Facebook or watching the occasional YouTube Video, everything that requires fast internet speeds is connected via LAN. In terms of mounting, I will not be putting it in the ceiling or the wall, I’m thinking I’ll put it in a high shelf or something like that. Is there any problems in buying a ceiling mount and not mounting it on the ceiling? Anyways do not take the mounting method into consideration it can be anything.
I will not be setting up VLans, the WiFi will not be used by more than 3 people simultaneously at any moment, this is a home not a business, everything is connected with CAT6, Internet speed is 1000Mb Download 800Mb Upload fiber connection, and for shipping and price’s sake I am located in Portugal.
This whole process has already cost me a bit more than I antecipated so the cheaper the better for the WaP (I do not mind paying for quality, I prefer it even, so i still want a good price/performance, but I am tight on cash for this purchase, and it really is a simple job the WaP will have)
Any more info that you need feel free to ask, thank you very much for your time.
